SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of optimising a website in order to rank it higher in search engines (google etc). This makes the site more visible to people looking for solutions that your brand, product or service can offer. The more times you search for something on google, the higher a site appears, the more likely you are to visit it. And the lower it is in the results (or even worse in subsequent pages) the less likely you are to click on it, as you are content with the first results. All major search engines publish an algorithm on how to rank sites organically. SEO goes through your site and makes all the necessary changes to ensure top rankings in all the major search engines. However, it takes time. Once your site has a proper structure, Google crawls it, "reads" it and analyzes it page by page. Then, after applying specific criteria, it decides how "remarkable" it is and gives it a rating. SEO makes sure that the site has the highest possible ranking because the higher the ranking, the higher the site will appear in search engines. In order to evaluate the site and each page, it evaluates many different elements, each of which holds a different weight. Examples are the title, the keywords, the image tags, the internal structure of the links, the inbound links and much more.
