Kefalonia resorts – pick your corner of a very big island

Look at Kefalonia on a map of the Ionian, and it seems like a neat little holiday island. Then you rent a car, head over for a swim, and realise, around the third hairpin bend, that it is the largest of the Ionian islands and mostly mountain. That is why choosing between Kefalonia resorts is less about the hotel itself and more about which corner of the island you want to wake up in.

Argostoli and Lassi, close to everything

If you like to land, drop your bags and be in the sea within the hour, the area around the capital is hard to beat. The airport is only a short drive from Argostoli, and Lassi, the resort strip just outside town, is about five minutes away by taxi. Here you get sandy beaches such as Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos, plenty of restaurants and an easy evening stroll into town.

Argostoli has one more trick. Loggerhead turtles feed in the harbour, and early in the morning you can often spot them surfacing near the fishing boats while you are still holding your first coffee. The flip side of all this convenience is company, since Lassi gets busy in high season. It suits first-timers, families who want short drives and anyone who plans to explore the island with a different beach every day.

Skala, the south coast for sandcastles

Down on the south-east coast, Skala is the classic beach resort, with a long beach that slopes gently into the water and a relaxed row of tavernas and bars behind it. It is the sort of place where children build forts all morning and parents only have to decide between grilled fish and moussaka.

The trade-off is distance. Skala is under an hour from the airport, but the famous sights of the north are a long drive away, so it works best if your idea of a perfect day involves very little time behind the wheel.

The north, for the postcard views

The road north from Argostoli runs along cliffs above some of the bluest water in Greece and drops down towards Myrtos, the white pebble beach that appears on half the island’s postcards. Nearby, Assos is a tiny village below an old castle, small enough to walk around before lunch.

At the very tip, Fiskardo is the most polished corner of Kefalonia. It was one of the few places on the island to come through the 1953 earthquake largely intact, so its old Venetian-style houses still line the harbour. Yachts tie up in the evening, prices climb a little and the mood turns pleasantly cosmopolitan. Fiskardo has no big beach of its own, though small coves such as Emplisi and Foki are close by. From here Argostoli is more than an hour away, so Kefalonia resorts in the north suit travellers who want scenery and long dinners more than a busy itinerary.

Agia Efimia and Sami, the easy middle

On the east coast, Agia Efimia is a small fishing village with a marina and pebbly beaches within walking distance. It is a quieter base, yet central enough to reach Myrtos, Assos and the caves without spending the whole day in the car.

Sami, a short drive south, is a working port with Antisamos beach just over the hill, the crescent of white pebbles where Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was filmed. Melissani Cave is also nearby, an underground lake with a collapsed roof where boatmen row you across the water. Go around midday, when the sun shines straight through the opening and turns the lake an almost unreal shade of blue.

Kefalonia resorts out of season

July and August on the island are hot and busy, while June and September bring warm seas and fewer people. The season is also getting longer. For 2026, some airlines extended their flights to Kefalonia until the end of October, so a late season stay is easier to plan than it used to be. October is mild and good for walking and driving the mountain roads, and May fills the hillsides with wildflowers.

Whichever corner you choose, rent a car. Public buses mostly serve locals, and the best coves are tucked at the bottom of winding roads.

The case for staying twice

You will probably leave Kefalonia with a list of beaches you never reached, and that is simply what happens on an island this size. Pick one base for this trip, take your time with it, and save the other side of the mountain for next year. The turtles will still be in Argostoli harbour, and your morning coffee will still taste better with them in view.
