Opera Music At A Glance

Opera, which in Latin means "work", is a type of art that narrates a dramatic or comedic story through song, movement, and music. The main difference with the musical, is that in opera the singers do not have a microphone and the music is performed by a live orchestra.

In the middle of the 17th century, Venice became the opera center of Europe, as the first opera house, the theater San Cassiano, was opened there. The goal of an opera performance was, in addition to enchanting and traveling the audience with the music, to move them through the plot of the story. For this reason, the composers wrote the operas in the language of the audience they were addressing.

The typical setting of an opera house consists of a large stage on which the singers and actors stand and a level below there is the pit where the orchestra is set up. Of course, the rest of the room consists of seats for the spectators as well as the theoreticians, as well as the backstage area where the technicians have their equipment and the performers have a place to change costumes and rest.

Opera was considered a type of music that only the rich and the upper classes could afford to attend, and the truth is that even today there are many who believe the same. But this is no longer the case, as opera performances are neither expensive nor require a special dress code.
