The Volcanic Nature Of Santorini

Santorini till recent was not the ideal destination for motorbikers. Though last years road that cross villages constructed and now place is safe enough for those who want to venture a most romantic road trip.

Santorini is a part of a circular archipelago of islands which bears the same name and is also known as Thira. This archipelago is the remains of the once circular island Strongýlē, a circular island caldera which collapsed after one of the largest volcanic events in human history, the Minoan eruption, dating back in the 17th or 16th century BC, and caused the gradual decline, and later downfall, of the Minoan civilization in Crete.

This event though caused the island and its surrounding island formations their unique appearance and geological interest. As time went on, new island formations appeared due to a combination of the caldera’s activity and due to earthquakes. The first of them is Aspronisi, the white isle, which is mainly comprised of pumice as a result of the aforementioned eruption. As for the most recent ones, one of them being Palea Kameni, the old burnt isle, formed between the beginning of the second and the latter half of the first century BC. The second one is Nea Kameni, the New Burnt Isle which was formed by a lava outpour in the beginning of the 18th century. Between 1925 and 1928, renewed volcanic activity unified it with Mikri Kameni, a small volcanic isle which had started to form during the seventh decade of the 16th century, along a small islet which was known as Dafni. Nea Kameni is accessible to tourists via boat and the entirety of the volcanic crater can be traversed.
