Porto Heli is a small village next to the sea, with 1900 inhabitants. It is part of the Prefecture of Argolis and is founded on the southern end of the Ermionida municipality, facing the islands of Hydra and Spetses. The name of Porto Heli, as it is said, is the result of a gradual linguistic corruption of the name ”Alieis“, the ancient city where Porto Heli is built on. The name Alieis became Chalieis and then Heli. In order to be differentiated from another village close to the area, named Heli (which now has been renamed to Arachnaio), it was given the nickname “Porto” due to its harbor.
Porto Heli is built in a closed bay where a natural port is formed and is considered to be one of the most developed tourist locations in Argolis. It is a very popular tourist destination for all seasons of the year, while the western side of the bay of Porto Heli, the small peninsula of Northeastern Peloponnese, is unique for its glamorous villas as well as for its mesmerizing nature and its mild climate.
Porto Heli is internationally known for its amazing shores, its clear, blue water and its wonderful climate. The sea portrait includes trawlers, boats and sailboats, while the coast offers ouzo and fish taverns.
