Athens Center Part 1

Walking tours of the historic center of Athens begin at Omonia Square, accessible by metro lines 1 (green) and 2 (red). The sister hotels "Bageion" and "Alexander the Great" overlooking the square are worth a visit. Between these buildings is the entrance to Athinas Street, at the end of which you can see the sacred rocks of the Acropolis. Follow Athinas Str for about 100 meters to reach the Kotzia Squar


e. This square has a long history and lots of attractions. On the right is the Old Town Hall of Athens, in the background is the central building of the National Bank of Greece, built in the 19th century, and on the right is the magnificent Melas Manor, built by the famous architect Ernst Ziller.


In the direction of Melas Manor, cross the square, pass its beautiful fountain and into Aeolou street. An ancient wall was discovered there, turning this street into an archaeological site. As you will approach Sofokleous Street, you will find yourself in the bustling commercial center of Athens. There are small shops selling spices, meat and cheese everywhere. A few steps to the right of the market's beating are the Varvakeios Market, a magnificent building built in the 19th century, which has been completely refurbished with a variety of products. Strolling through the bustling markets and past the stalls, feel the rhythm of everyday life in Athens, as it has been for thousands of years.



Exit the market and enter Evripidou str, "spice street". Here you are sure to find the best shops selling gourmet spices and other traditional products such as cheeses, herbs, pastrami, sausages and soutzouk. Follow Ag. Markou str the clothing market and the historic center. From fun spices to colorful fabrics, clothes, linens and countless fabric shops, if you're looking for something truly unique, ribbons and buttons you will find here.
