Since Jackie O’ and Aristotle Onassis walked barefoot around the chora in the 1960s, the world of glitterati and even ordinary folk with a fondness for glitz combined with traditional island splendour refuse to stop adoring Mykonos. Follow these steps to make the best of your experience there.
1. The Hotspots
Mykonos’ Chora (main town) is the only Chora in Cyclades islands that’s at the same level as the port – usually the Chora is built high up, which makes it especially charming especially as you visit Little Venice. The area, filled with 18th Century sea captain’s houses that stand in the water, is ideal for sipping a cocktail as the waves lap at your feet and the sun dives into the horizon. Scorpios too, is considered an unmissable destination for all-day partying with stunning sea surroundings and view.
2. The Beaches With over 50 beaches, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you prefer privacy, natural free beaches and calm, head to the small & large sandy beaches of Aghios Sostis, Ftelia (popular among surfers), Fokos and Merchia. For glamourour beach experiences visit Panormos, Paraga, Paradise and Platys Gyalos.
3. The Shops With regular streams of top celebs, designers, millionaires and influencers visiting, Mykonos is filled with designer shops selling everything your heart could dream of. The place to shop is in Chora, as you walk along the central ‘matogiania’ road where you’ll find clothes, jewellery, accessories, art and home décor items by some of the world’s most exclusive creators – considered the most famous shopping area in the world. Indeed rents are sky-high in this street, which is considered one of the most famous shopping spots in the world.

Pigadia in Chora to see an example of a normal Mykonos residence from the 19th Century, with furnishgings and décor. Also don’t miss the Folklore Museum in Kastro near Paraportiani Church (also well worth visiting). The Archaeological Museum near the port is where you’ll see ancient artifacts discovered in different periods around the island.
