Not many are those who know the true story behind the name of Oia, the famous town on the legendary island of Santorini. Oia was named during the 1930s. In the ancient past, Oia was used for the area where Kamari is located today. It was the “Thireon polis”. In the beginning it was the main port of ancient Thira, the great city on inner Santorini. Today, Oia is thought to be the most amazing and traditional town on the island. It can be found on the north part of Santorini and is also called “Apano Meria” or “Anomeria”. The town is approximately 150 meters above sea level.
