Opera and classical music flourished in Europe and especially in Italy during the 16th century. Nuclear component for the development of this musical genre was monody, which was the dominant practice. 16th century Italian composers tried to promote speech through music following the standards of ancient Greek theater. It is no coincidence that musical genres such as opera and oratorio have adopted many elements of this ancient Greek art.
The word opera is essentially the plural of the Latin word "opus" which means work. It marks the utilization of a variety of artistic genres under its umbrella such as dance theater music and scenography. It combines music and theater
since the conversation of the actors takes place through singing. In the Greek language we will often encounter it with the term melodrama, although the term is much broader.
Opera is one of the most important musical cultural products and one of the oldest musical genres. With the same name we often refer to the theater in which performances are presented. It is characteristic that the opera gave life to the ancient Greek tragedy once more. Many well-known operas of the 16th and 17th centuries re-presented ancient Greek themes, with the dominant one being the tragic poets of the 5th century BC. Many Italian composers conversed with ancient Greek works and revived them through compositions of ballet opera and symphonic works.
