How to get in Alonissos
Ferry services to Alonissos are available from Agios Konstantinos port and Volos Town port, with an average travel time of 4 hours. During the summer season, additional ferry routes are offered from Kymi or Mantoudi in Evia island. It's important to note that there are no direct ferry routes from Athens to Alonissos, so you need to take a KTEL bus to either Volos or Evia and then transfer to the ferry. For more information on KTEL bus schedules, please visit www.ktelattikis.gr. Additionally, Alonissos is connected to Skiathos and Skopelos islands by ferry. Also, as there is no airport on the island, the closest airport options are located in Skiathos or Volos.
As you arrive on the island, you'll be greeted by a charming small port and a picturesque beach to the left, surrounded by beautiful pine trees. While the main settlement of Patitiri may not boast any architectural marvels, it offers a variety of shops, bars, and commercial outlets where you can purchase all your essentials. However, the true highlight of your trip will be a visit to the Chora of Alonissos, located just a 10-minute drive from Patitiri. This stunning hillside settlement boasts enchanting stone alleys, tasteful houses, and a plethora of amazing restaurants and bars, all overlooking the breathtaking Aegean Sea. Get ready to be swept away by its irresistible charm and immaculate beauty.
Alonissos Beaches - A Stunning Setting
One of the biggest draws of Alonissos is its stunning beaches. The island has crystal-clear waters and secluded coves that are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Some of the most popular beaches on the island include Agios Dimitrios, Chrisi Milia, Leftos Gialos, and Milia. The beaches are not overcrowded, and visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and stunning views of the sea. Out of all the beaches on the island, my personal favorite is Megali Ammos (Large Sand), despite it being the smallest one! Unlike the others, it is a bit harder to access since the parking lot is located at the top of a hill and a dirt road through a pine forest leads to the beach. The walk takes about five minutes, but the stunning view of the clear blue waters that awaits you at the bottom is worth every step. It's a hidden gem that's sure to reward you with a tranquil and memorable beach experience.
What Else About Alonissos?
Alonissos stands out as one of the cleanest and tidiest islands I've ever visited in Greece. It's remarkable how you won't come across a single piece of litter throughout the island. The pristine environment is truly amazing and adds to the overall charm of the place. Another highlight of Alonissos is its unspoiled nature. The island is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos, a protected area that is home to rare species of flora and fauna, including the Mediterranean monk seal. Visitors can take a boat tour of the park to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The island is also perfect for hiking, with many trails that wind through the lush green forests and rocky terrain.
Alonissos is also rich in history and culture. The island has a long and fascinating history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. Visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient city of Ikos and the medieval castle of Chora, which offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. The island is also known for its traditional festivals and celebrations, such as the feast of Agios Panteleimonas, which takes place in July.
Alonissos Hotels & Restaurants
In terms of accommodation, Alonissos has a range of options to suit all budgets and preferences. There are cozy guesthouses, luxury villas, and everything in between. When it comes to booking accommodations on Alonissos, there are three options worth considering. If you're looking to be in the heart of the action, the Port (Patitiri) is a great choice, with plenty of bars and nightlife. For a more romantic getaway, Chora is the place to be. With its stunning architecture and charming atmosphere, it's no surprise that this hilltop village is often considered the most beautiful on the island. Finally, if you're seeking a more peaceful retreat, consider Steni Vala. This picturesque fishing village is tucked away on the southeast side of the island and offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the main town.
During your holidays you can also enjoy the local cuisine in amazing Alonissos restaurants, which is characterized by fresh seafood, locally grown produce, and traditional dishes such as moussaka and spanakopita. The island has many restaurants and taverns that serve delicious food, and visitors can also sample the local wine, which is produced on the island. Don’t miss the chance to eat in Elaionas beach bar (the largest beach bar in the country) and in Tassia’s Cooking restaurant in Steni Vala (here you have to make a reservation).
